An agency is an organism, not a hierarchy ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿคโ€

The key to sustainable agency growth is hiding in plain sight

Welcome back to The Agency CEO (by me, Jesse Gilmore at Niche in Control).

Every Thursday, I send you a quick 10-minute read on the tools, tactics, and systems that the top 1% of agency owners have used to scale their businesses to 7-figures and beyond.

This week, weโ€™re talking all about how to structure your agency for efficiency, growth, and performance.

Letโ€™s dive in ๐Ÿ‘‡

โ€œYou need to build a team of people who can do the work of your agency better than you can. You need a team of people who have enough integrity and skill to grow into the roles your agency needs, so your agency can run without you.โ€

Organism > Hierarchy

The most successful agency owners understand that their business is an organism, not a hierarchy.

What exactly does that mean?

Everyone collaborates and adapts collectively to drive innovation and growth without relying solely on one leader.

Now, letโ€™s talk about the key concepts that will help you make this transition:

  1. Collaborative decision-making: Shift from a hierarchy to an organism model to encourage collective decision-making. This empowers team members to contribute and innovate.

How to make it happen: Involve your team in strategic decisions, hold regular brainstorming sessions, and create a culture where every voice is heard and valued.

  2. Prevent burnout: Avoid the traditional hierarchy to prevent burnout by distributing responsibilities and decision-making processes.

How to make it happen: Delegate tasks, ensure work-life balance, and recognize and address signs of burnout early.

  3. Servant leadership: As a business owner, your role transitions to serving your team by removing obstacles and enabling them to achieve their goals.

How to make it happen: Regularly check in with team members to identify challenges, provide necessary resources, and support their professional development.

  4. Create autonomy: Aim to build a team that can operate with autonomy. Initially, guide and train your team, then gradually reduce oversight as trust and competency grow.

How to make it happen: Provide clear guidelines and training, then step back to allow your team to take ownership of their tasks and responsibilities.

  5. Team structure: An organism-like structure involves interconnected teams that work collaboratively, rather than in isolated hierarchies.

How to make it happen: Break down silos, encourage cross-functional teamwork, and implement collaborative tools and processes.

  6. Cultural reflection: Your agency culture should reflect your principles and leadership style to promote a positive and productive work environment.

How to make it happen: Lead by example, uphold and communicate your core values, and create a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

ACTION ITEM: Choose one โ€” just one โ€” of these concepts to take action on over the next one to two weeks.

Ditch the agency hierarchy and turn your business into a collection of talent working as one.
